Abstract

Computational modeling and simulation forms an important component in the set of tools used by engineers to develop, test, and ensure the safety & efficacy of new medical devices. An ecosystem of physical testing, measurement of in vivo use conditions, and a solid understanding of how similar devices perform in vivo support the development and appropriate validation of computational models. Several case studies illustrate the effective use of computational modeling and simulation to ensure that patients can benefit from the lifesaving technologies that engineers help produce in the medical device industry.

Biography

Dr. Walt Baxter measures the physiologic use conditions of implanted devices at Medtronic, most recently within the Cardiac Rhythm Management Group where he helps develop leads and catheters for use in the cardiovascular system. Walt is a Medtronic Bakken Fellow—the Company’s highest technical honor—and is also an active Fellow of the Biomedical Engineering Society, where he helped lead the FDA/BMES Frontiers in Medical Devices conference bringing medical device modeling and simulation experts together across government, academia, and industry. Prior to joining Medtronic, Walt studied Mechanical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and obtained a Ph.D. in Bioengineering at the University of California, San Diego.
